There are 32 Stop & Shop grocery store locations in the United States, including eight in Massachusetts; the company announced that it will be closed for business in 2024 due to poor performance.
According to the Press Release attached to this statement, “the Quincy-based supermarket chain said all of the closures are expected to happen ‘on or before Nov. 2.’Specific store closing dates will be communicated ‘well in advance’ to customers”.
Eight Massachusetts Stop & Shop locations are ready to close:
Brockton — 932 North Montello St.
Raynham — 36 New State Highway
Halifax — 341 Plymouth St.
Shrewsbury — 539-571 Boston Turnpike
Newton — 165 Needham St.
Springfield — 415 Cooley St.
Worcester — 545 Lincoln St.
Pembroke — 24 Mattakeesett St.
The termination store also includes seven store locations across New England — five in Connecticut, and two in Rhode Island. There are also northeastern store locations in New York and New Jersey looking forward to being discontinued.
“As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid reported in a statement.
Reid explained that all Stop & Shop employees at terminating stores will be provided jobs at other store locations.
“Our associates are a strong community dedicated to growing and working together, and all of our store associates will continue to have a place in the Stop & Shop family as we look forward to serving customers at other nearby locations,” said Reid.
There are 32 termination stores for more than 8% of Stop & Shop's nearly 400 locations in New England and two Northeastern States such as New York, and New Jersey. Once the store is discontinued, the Stop & Shop Company explains that it will remain in other locations. 81 locations in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, 47 in New Jersey, 91 in New York, and 25 in Rhode Island.
