Amanda Abbington, actor and contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, has expressed concerns about using public transport after receiving online threats following her complaints of bullying on the show. Abbington reported the teaching methods of her former dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, months after withdrawing early from the 2023 series of the celebrity competition.

Abbington, known for her roles in Sherlock and Mr Selfridge, alleges she experienced "inappropriate, mean, nasty bullying" and a "toxic environment" during her time on the show. Pernice, who has since left his role as a Strictly professional, denies any claims of threatening or abusive behavior and anticipates being cleared . In 2016, Pernice's dance partner, former Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore, also reported "inappropriate behavior" during her time on the show, though she did not specify Pernice by name.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Abbington shared that she had withdrawn from social media due to "incredibly toxic and relentless" online abuse from Strictly fans, which included death and rape threats against her and her family. She noted that she feels vulnerable and exposed when using public transport due to the nature of these threats.

Abbington mentioned that her comments had encouraged others to speak up in their workplaces. She described her relationship with Pernice as initially positive but deteriorating into "chaos," citing frequent red flags and bad behavior. Abbington said she approached the producers about her concerns, only to find out that such behavior had been reported before.

She claimed that producers installed cameras in the training studio but did not act on her allegations. Abbington emphasized that women should be able to voice their concerns about unacceptable behavior without fear of retaliation. She credited her fellow actor, Sue Vincent, co creator of The Madame Blanc Mysteries, for encouraging her to speak out. Abbington concluded by stating that women should not have to endure such behavior and should feel empowered to stand up against it to ensure a fair and supportive environment for everyone involved.
