In a concerning escalation of politically-motivated violence, Jeffrey Michael Kelly, a 60-year-old resident of Arizona, was arrested and charged with terrorism and other related offenses for allegedly conducting three separate shootings targeting a Democratic campaign office in Tempe, Arizona. Authorities report that Kelly had accumulated an extensive arsenal at his residence, including over 120 firearms, 250,000 rounds of ammunition, and a machine gun found in his car. This cache, which also included items such as scopes, body armor, and silencers, has raised suspicions among prosecutors that Kelly was potentially preparing for a larger-scale "mass casualty" event.
Arizona, a swing state with an anticipated tight race between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her Republican opponent Donald Trump, is seen as critical to either party's path to victory in the upcoming 2024 election. This battleground status has amplified anxieties regarding political security, and the recent attacks on the Democratic office in Tempe have escalated fears over politically-driven violence in the state.
The incidents, which took place under the cover of darkness, thankfully did not result in any injuries. However, after the third attack, conducted with a mix of BB gun pellets and live bullets, Democratic staff were compelled to close the office temporarily. The Democratic campaign in Tempe expressed relief following Kelly’s arrest, noting that their sense of safety was compromised during this series of attacks.
Kelly was taken into custody following a tip from the public. During a search of his home, authorities found significant evidence of a possible larger plan, including body armor and several silencers. Maricopa County Deputy Attorney Neha Bhatia reported that the weapons and accessories collected gave law enforcement reason to believe Kelly may have intended a more severe attack on the public.
In addition to the alleged shootings, Kelly is accused of taking further action against the Democratic Party’s presence in the area. He reportedly lined campaign signs with razor blades and coated them with a suspicious white powder, actions that have been seen as additional threats to public safety and further justification for his terrorism charge.
Kelly's defense attorney, who described him as a "genius" but not a "menacing figure," argued that his client has no prior criminal record and is legally licensed to own firearms. However, these reassurances have done little to alleviate concerns among Democratic campaign staff in the area. Kelly’s bail has been set at $500,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday, when he is expected to enter a formal plea.
