Several people have died from heat related conditions in the past 24 hours as temperatures soar across northern and central India. Here are some key details.
Deaths
Ten deaths were reported at a government hospital in Odisha's Rourkela region on Thursday. Similar incidents have been documented in states including Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and the national capital, Delhi.
Impact on Elections
The scorching temperatures coincide with India's general election, the results of which are due on June 4th. Mahendra Kumar, the district magistrate of Bhojpur district in Bihar, confirmed the death of three election officers and a policeman due to heatstroke. Additionally, around 30,40 individuals were admitted to the hospital with heat related ailments.
Hospital Admissions
Hospitals in the region are seeing a surge in admissions due to these conditions. The relentless heat, persisting for the past two weeks, has pushed maximum temperatures to around 45 to 46°C, reaching up to 50°C in some areas.
Water and Electricity Shortages
Severe water and electricity shortages caused by the extreme heat have contributed to a rise in fires across the country. Authorities are using drones to monitor forest fires in Jammu and Kashmir.
Record breaking Temperatures
Delhi and its surrounding regions experienced record breaking temperatures nearing 50°C in the past week. This has led to scenes of residents scrambling for water from tankers and facing frequent power cuts.
Concerns over Accuracy
Officials are investigating whether a recorded temperature of 52.9°C in the Mungeshpur area was accurate or a result of sensor malfunction.
Longer, Intense, and Frequent Heatwaves
Experts warn that heatwaves in India are becoming longer, more intense, and more frequent.
It is crucial to address the impact of extreme heat on vulnerable populations and take necessary measures to mitigate its effects.
