There was a high interest in developing the Barbie Doll of Aaliyah, which has true potential in “One In A Million”—it represents that the doll has completely sold out. The Doll was published on January 16, the late R&B singer’s birthday, through the Mattel Website.
The Barbie Instagram account reported the recent addition to the Barbie Music Series, “Today on Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie honors the Princess of R&B’s unmatched legacy as a once-in-a-generation talent.”
“A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, the Aaliyah Barbie doll remembers her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations,” the post statement.
Influenced by her outfit in the 1996 “One in a Million” music video, photos appear of the doll in a sleeveless faux leather vest, a black faux leather crop top, and silver-studded pants. Additionally, it shows her signature black aviator sunglasses and armbands to finish the sex appeal.
Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah’s brother, collaborated with Mattel to bring the doll to life and reported being mind-blown by the result. He explained on Today Show that his sister would adore the edgy style, let alone her favorite color, “all black.”
“It’s still tight-fitting; it’s still a little bit sexy. But it’s pants, so it brings that power that confidence and expression,” said Houghton. “It really just checked all the boxes of what my sister represents and also what Barbie represents, which is empowerment and expression.”
The release was officially available to Mattel’s Barbie Club 59 members for $55.00. Target is ready to publish the doll for $55.99 on January 26 providing fans another opportunity to get their feet wet on the trend-setting property.
Aaliyah’s sophomore album, “One in a Million” was double platinum within a year of its publication in August 1996. She also earned Grammy-Award nominations for hits including “Are You That Somebody”, and “Try Again”.
She passed away at the age of 22 on August 25, 2001, in a plane crash in the Bahamas. The aircraft went down shortly after takeoff that killed eight other people on board.
Mattel reported about the Barbie Doll: “Aaliyah’s smooth vocals and innovative sound helped shape ‘90s R&B, and her influence on music and fashion continues to be felt today. Our tribute to ‘Babygirl’s’ life and sound will take any collection to the top of the charts.”
