Pitbull’s “Hotel Room Service” is a track synonymous with lively club scenes and energetic car rides, where the chant “Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn!” is shouted with gusto. It’s the antithesis of a tender ballad about lost love, yet Camila Cabello seamlessly integrates it into such a ballad on her fourth album, C,XOXO. This album is a tapestry of unexpected twists, featuring a Charli XCX and Gucci Mane inspired shift on the lead single “I Luv It,” and not one, but two Drake collaborations. However, the most surprising twist is the sample from Pitbull’s track on “B.O.A.T.”

In the chorus of “B.O.A.T.,” where Cabello reflects on all the things her ex never revealed to her (a possible nod to Shawn Mendes), a faint synth line emerges. Initially, it seems improbable, but soon it becomes clear, the iconic “Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn!” is unmistakable. This surprising element not only fits but is, in fact, delightful.

Upon first hearing the familiar line in such a vulnerable song, listeners might experience a range of emotions—from disbelief and amusement to seeking deeper meaning. Perhaps Cabello is suggesting a desire for her ex to forget his current partner and meet her. Regardless, the initially jarring inclusion ultimately feels ingenious. This encapsulates C,XOXO, a blend of playful and emotional moments, all underpinned by a Miami influence.

Prerelease, C,XOXO seemed scattered, with Cabello making bold moves like dyeing her hair blonde and performing at Coachella with Lana Del Rey. However, the album’s unifying theme is a love letter to her hometown. Collaborating with producers El Guincho and Jasper Harris, Cabello crafts a beat driven, sample rich album reflecting Miami’s diverse music scene, merging hip hop, club, and Latin trap influences. Many tracks evoke the vibe of the Spring Breakers soundtrack, making Mr. 305’s presence almost inevitable. The fact that his influence appears on one of the album’s most intimate tracks is a testament to Cabello’s innovative approach.

Beneath its vibrant exterior, C,XOXO is deeply personal. Cabello delves into how her hometown shaped her as an artist, explores the highs and lows of love, and contemplates her past mistakes. On “B.O.A.T.,” the intersection of melancholy and exuberance is perfectly captured. Just as with “Hotel Room Service” during a night out, C,XOXO invites listeners to embrace the unexpected and immerse themselves in the music.
