Actress Cate Blanchett, known for her role as the elf Galadriel in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," recently revealed that the cast did not receive significant compensation for their work on the blockbuster film. During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," Blanchett participated in a game of "Plead the Fifth" where she was asked about the movie for which she received the largest paycheck.

When host Andy Cohen suggested that her biggest payday might have come from "The Lord of the Rings," Blanchett expressed disbelief. "Are you kidding me? No. No one got paid anything to do that movie," she said, surprising Cohen. She further clarified that she did not receive any backend earnings from the film, which refers to a percentage of the box office profits that some stars receive. "That was way before any of that. No, nothing," she explained.

Blanchett shared that her motivation for taking on the role in the 2001 film was the opportunity to work with director Peter Jackson, known for his earlier work on the 1992 horror comedy "Braindead." Reflecting on her experience, she joked, "I basically got free sandwiches. And I got to keep my ears," referring to the prosthetic elf ears she wore as Galadriel.

Despite the modest pay, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" went on to gross nearly $900 million worldwide, solidifying its place as one of the most successful films in history. Blanchett is currently promoting her latest project, "Borderlands," which is set to release in theaters on Friday.
