Chappell Roan's remarkable summer reached new heights with her unprecedented crowd at the Lollapalooza music festival over the weekend. The 26 year old pop sensation drew a massive audience on Thursday, the first day of the Chicago festival, fueled by the success of her 2024 single "Good Luck Babe!" and her 2023 hit "Feminomenon," which has gained significant traction on social media.
A post on Lollapalooza's official X account highlighted Roan's impact, stating, "It’s Chappell’s world and we’re just living in it," accompanied by an image of a large crowd at Grant Park. While the exact attendance for her set is not confirmed, a Lollapalooza spokesperson noted that the festival saw 110,000 attendees each day this year. Sources close to the singer and the festival suggested that Roan's crowd rivaled those of many headliners, potentially marking the largest set in Lollapalooza's history.
Lollapalooza, which began as a touring event in 1991 and expanded internationally in 2010, now hosts festivals in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Sweden, France, and India. This year's headliners included Blink 182, The Killers, SZA, Megan Thee Stallion, and Melanie Martinez.
Originally scheduled to perform on a smaller stage, Roan's overwhelming popularity led to her being moved to the main stage, swapping set times with Kesha. This adjustment came after a similar situation in June at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee, where her set was relocated to a larger stage due to an unexpectedly large crowd.
Roan's performances at Coachella and Governor’s Ball earlier this year also garnered significant attention, particularly for her politically charged act at Governor’s Ball, where she wore a drag inspired Statue of Liberty costume and painted her body green. Roan is set to perform next at Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park. Although she is not scheduled as a headliner, organizers are likely preparing for another substantial turnout given her recent track record.
