Construction is set to commence on transforming Coventry's former Ikea store into a cultural hub and arts venue, following the appointment of contractor ISG. The project, named the City Centre Cultural Gateway and located on Croft Road, will begin in August and is scheduled for completion by autumn 2025.
Councillor David Welsh of Coventry City Council expressed his excitement about the commencement of this significant cultural project, describing it as a "really impressive new cultural landmark in the city." He highlighted the importance of the construction milestone and anticipated further developments and updates as the project progresses.
The revamped building will feature artists' studios, post production filming facilities, galleries, and a café. The existing 9 meter high warehouse area will be converted into a temperature controlled storage facility for art collections.
ISG's spokesperson noted that the building's exterior would undergo significant changes, including new cladding, spray painted finishes, and the addition of panoramic windows. The project will also involve upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems, structural modifications, and a complete overhaul of the 60,000 square meter space.
Louise Daville, director at ISG, praised the project's innovative approach to repurposing retail space into a cultural hub. She emphasized the Cultural Gateway's role in offering a diverse experience for visitors, students, and academics within a central location.
The former Ikea store in Coventry closed in 2020, and the city council subsequently acquired its leasehold.
