Gunther to Challenge World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest at 2024 SummerSlam

Gunther, the 2024 King of the Ring winner, is set to challenge Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship at this year’s SummerSlam. The anticipation surrounding Gunther’s next opponent began the moment he secured his victory in the King of the Ring Tournament.

Throughout his reign, Damian Priest has successfully defended his title against formidable adversaries such as Drew McIntyre and Seth “Freakin” Rollins, and he even thwarted a Money in the Bank cash in attempt by McIntyre himself. Despite these challenges, Priest emerged victorious, and now he will put his championship on the line in a first time encounter against Gunther.

Gunther, known as the Ring General, previously held the Intercontinental Championship for a record setting 666 days until his reign was ended by Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL. Since then, Gunther has been on a dominant path, culminating in his triumph over Randy Orton in the King of the Ring Final.

On the other hand, Damian Priest has been on a remarkable championship run since he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on McIntyre at WrestleMania XL, defeating him to claim the World Heavyweight Championship. Priest has since retained his title against challengers including Jey Uso, McIntyre, and Rollins. However, Priest’s reign has not been without its difficulties, as The Judgment Day faction has been plagued by internal conflicts, notably highlighted by Liv Morgan’s complex relationship with “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio.

As the two competitors prepare for their clash, the question remains, Will Priest continue his impressive reign as World Heavyweight Champion, or will Gunther emerge victorious and claim the title for himself?

Don’t miss this thrilling showdown at WWE SummerSlam, streaming live on Saturday, August 3, at 7 PM ET / 4 PM PT on Peacock in the United States and on WWE Network internationally.
