Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine had an impressive opening weekend in the US, ranking as the eighth biggest opening ever and the best of the year so far. The third installment of the Deadpool series, starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, grossed $205 million (£160 million) at the domestic box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This marks the highest ever opening for an R-rated film, surpassing the $134 million record set by the first Deadpool in 2016. Internationally, the film opened to $233 million (£182 million). This success stands in stark contrast to last year's The Marvels, which earned just $47 million (£38 million) in its first US weekend, marking the lowest opening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Ryan Reynolds thanked fans on Instagram for their support, calling the film's success "kind of hard to process."

The plot of the film involves Deadpool attempting to leave his superhero past behind, only for his peaceful life to be disrupted when the MCU's Time Variance Authority, tasked with managing the multiverse timelines, spirals out of control. Succession's Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr. Paradox, a corporate figure who tries to secretly enlist Deadpool to protect the primary "sacred" timeline by sacrificing his own world. Deadpool, refusing, pulls a reluctant Wolverine into his timeline to help save the day.

While reviews from critics have been mixed, many have described the film as a much needed boost for Marvel. The Guardian's three star review noted that the film "mocks the MCU back to life," with Deadpool's quip about his savior complex being "basically right." Variety appreciated the film's "misty eyed" fan service, calling it a "welcome corrective" to 15 years of MCU complexity, despite the special effects and action sequences not always matching those of the 2018 sequel.

Regarding potential future spin offs for Deadpool and Wolverine, Reynolds told us that he enjoys making standalone films, stating, "Deadpool and Wolverine isn't a commercial for another movie. It's just not part of the DNA."

Last week, Taylor Swift, a friend of Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively, encouraged people to see the film, praising Reynolds for delivering the "best work of his life." Meanwhile, Pixar's Inside Out 2, which previously held the year's record for the biggest opening weekend, continued its box office success, surpassing $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) worldwide.
