Delhi Rain Traffic Disruption

By Thiloththama Jayasinghe, Jadetimes News

Delhi saw unprecedented waterlogging and huge tailbacks following heavy rainfall early Thursday. Overnight rain caused unprecedented disruptions in services across the city as large parts of the national capital and its adjoining areas, such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, saw massive water buildup due to flooding in low-lying areas.

Almost-submerged underpasses have only compounded the mayhem, with vehicles struggling to wade their way through waterlogged streets. As per IMD, Delhi-NCR is expected to receive widespread rainfall throughout the week. The inclement weather is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over southeast Uttar Pradesh and an east-west trough stretching from this region to the east central Bay of Bengal.

As for the weather conditions, Safdarjung observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 23°C on Thursday, which is three degrees below the normal for this time of year. The IMD also added that though the temperature is going to rise somewhat, unprecedented rainfall witnessed its highest in the last decade with 269.9 mm recorded by August 22 that surpassed the previous high from August 2013.

These heavy rains are causing immense disruption to daily life, particularly in transport and reaching workplaces. The administration is bound to be on high alert as the situation develops, with further rain exacerbating waterlogging and traffic.
