A French DJ who performed at the Paris Olympics' opening ceremony has lodged a legal complaint following online abuse. Barbara Butch participated in a drag queen segment during the event, which sparked controversy as some viewers interpreted it as a reference to The Last Supper. However, Thomas Jolly, the ceremony's artistic director, refuted this, stating that some art experts noted the scene bore more resemblance to a painting of Greek gods.

Barbara Butch’s lawyer explained that the DJ has received threats of death, torture, and rape, along with numerous antisemitic, homophobic, sexist, and grossophobic insults. Butch described the harassment as "cyber harassment," noting that the messages have become increasingly extreme.

French authorities typically review complaints before deciding whether to initiate a formal police investigation. Jolly clarified that the sequence, titled Festivity, was inspired by Greek mythology and aimed to celebrate diversity, not to be subversive or shocking. He emphasized that the presence of a figure representing the Greek god Dionysus made it clear the tableau was not inspired by The Last Supper.

Some viewers who saw similarities to The Last Supper were offended, and French Catholic bishops stated that Christians were hurt by the show. Butch, who wore a silver headdress resembling a halo during her performance, was surrounded by drag artists and dancers.

The organizers of the Paris Olympics stressed that there was no intent to disrespect any religious group and aimed to celebrate community tolerance. Butch’s lawyer, Audrey Msellati, announced the filing of multiple complaints, condemning the campaign of cyber harassment and defamation against Butch.

Butch also shared her own statement on Instagram, asserting her existence and refusing to be a victim. She expressed pride in her performance at the ceremony, stating her heart remains full of joy. The scene also featured French drag queen Nicky Doll and former contestants from Drag Race France.
