Pakistan's Strong Start Falters

Despite a commanding first innings total of 556, Pakistan were unable to sustain their momentum on the final day of the first Test in Multan. Pakistan's batting was anchored by a brilliant 151 from Shan Masood, but England's Jack Leach took 4-30 on the fifth day to secure a comprehensive win for England by an innings and 47 runs. Pakistan’s second innings score of 220 wasn’t enough to stave off defeat, despite a valiant partnership of 109 runs between Salman Agha (63) and Aamer Jamal (55).

England's Dominant Batting Display

England's victory was built on a monumental first innings score of 823-7 declared, their highest total since 1938. Harry Brook played a starring role with an extraordinary 317, his first triple century in Test cricket, while Joe Root contributed 262. Their 454 run partnership set up England’s record breaking triumph, marking only the second time in Test history that a team conceding over 550 runs in the first innings has won by an innings.

Leach's Heroics and Final Day Drama

On the final day, Leach swiftly removed Salman Agha and Shaheen Shah Afridi before wrapping up Pakistan’s innings by dismissing Naseem Shah to complete a well deserved victory for England. This marked England's fourth consecutive win in Pakistan, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three match series.

Pakistan’s Struggles Continue

For Pakistan, this defeat extends a concerning trend, as their winless streak at home now stands at 11 Test matches. Captain Shan Masood is under pressure, having lost all six Tests in charge, and Pakistan’s bowling attack failed to back up their strong first innings performance. Injuries and tactical errors compounded their issues, with both Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi struggling to make an impact in the field.

Looking Ahead: Challenges for Pakistan

With a quick turnaround before the second Test on the same ground, Pakistan will need to address their tactical approach and possibly make personnel changes, especially with Abrar Ahmed absent through illness. Coach Jason Gillespie will be seeking ways to lift the team’s confidence and performance ahead of the second match.

Post Match Reaction

England captain Ollie Pope praised his team’s batting efforts, especially the performances of Root and Brook. He acknowledged the challenges in taking wickets on a relatively flat pitch but emphasized the importance of keeping calm and sticking to plans. Harry Brook, the player of the match, described his innings as a combination of enjoying the challenge, building partnerships, and putting pressure on the bowlers. Pakistan captain Shan Masood reflected on his team’s failure to capitalize on their strong start, highlighting the need to follow through with both bat and ball.
