Thiloththama Jayasinghe, Jadetimes Staff
T. Jayasinghe is a Jadetimes news reporter covering Sri Lankan politics
It is mandated with monitoring and analyzing some of the key elements that will drive the process of elections in a transparent, peaceful, and inclusive manner.
It has been in country since 14 August with a core team of 10 election experts, and has also deployed 26 long-term observers to all nine provinces. The mission will assess all aspects of the electoral process, including election administration, legal frameworks, campaign conduct, media coverage, and the role of social media. The EU EOM will also evaluate the elections against both national laws and international standards to which Sri Lanka is a signatory.
Its work is guided by declaration and principles of independence, impartiality, and non-interference for a comprehensive observation process. After the election, an EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement and hold a press conference in Colombo. A comprehensive final report, including recommendations for future electoral reforms, will be published about two months later.
This is the seventh EU EOM to Sri Lanka since 2000, further underlining the sustained partnership of the EU and Sri Lanka to reinforce democratic processes.
