Professor Mark Westwood from Cranfield University emphasized the need for the next UK government to offer "commitment and stability" to support aerospace research, which is crucial for creating high Value jobs. As part of the "Race Across the East" election series, Professor Westwood highlighted Cranfield University's recent £69 million grant to explore hydrogen as a zero emission aviation fuel. He stressed that investment in R&D is vital for the UK to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to capitalize on future opportunities.

Westwood pointed out the global competition for aerospace investment, underscoring the importance of government support in fostering technological advancements and job creation. The Conservative government aims for net zero domestic aviation emissions by 2040, and Cranfield's Hydrogen Integration Incubator is a key initiative towards this goal, focusing on developing essential technologies and infrastructure for hydrogen powered aviation.

Both Conservative and Labour parties have pledged support for aviation decarbonization, with commitments to sustainable aviation fuels and new technologies. The Lib Dems advocate for a Net Zero Delivery Authority and a new aviation duty to target frequent flyers. The Green Party calls for reduced air travel to curb emissions, while Reform UK criticizes the net zero agenda for its economic impact and advocates for alternative environmental measures.
