It's always a challenge when it comes to adapting beloved animated classics into live-action movies, but the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon movie is already pulling them in. The first trailer reveals one crucial success: iconic dragon Toothless looks fantastic.
Instead of going for an ultra-realistic dragon design which would drain all the charm from the character, the filmmakers have kept what makes Toothless so lovable. His overall appearance remains true to the original design, complemented by realistic textures to suit the live-action genre. Returning fans will also know specific scenes, such as where Toothless and Hiccup first meet, which appears to be lifted directly from its animated counterpart. Playing to John Powell's signature score, the trailer is sure to bring back some of that dragon-riding magic.
This adaptation is based on DreamWorks' 2010 animated hit, which itself drew inspiration from Cressida Cowell's children's book series. The storyline is about Hiccup, an awkward teenage Viking who befriends a dragon, challenging the long-standing conflict between his village and the creatures.
How to Train Your Dragon has retained its original director, Dean DeBlois, at the helm- which is different from the case of many Disney live-action remakes. DeBlois brings his expertise back into the franchise, having previously also co-directed Lilo & Stitch, although he won't be directing the live-action remake of the latter set for next year.
It stars Mason Thames (The Black Phone) as Hiccup and Nico Parker from The Last of Us as the fearless Viking warrior Astrid. Also, reprising his voice for the role of the Viking chieftain, Stoick the Vast, will be Gerard Butler in this live-action adaptation of the animated series.
How to Train Your Dragon flies into theaters on June 13, 2025, promising a touching return into Berk's magical world.
