The world’s biggest sporting events often spotlight the superstars of the game, but they also serve as a platform to uncover emerging young talents. The ICC T20 World Cup is no exception, showcasing cricketers who entered as relative unknowns but left experts and fans in awe. Notable examples include Shakib al Hasan and Mohammad Amir in 2009, Virat Kohli in 2012, and Wanindu Hasaranga in 2022.

Here's list of five young players who could light up the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Arguably India’s brightest young cricketer in the past year, Yashasvi Jaiswal has proven himself in both long and short formats. The 23 year old’s compelling story and fearless batting approach have garnered significant attention. In his short T20 international career, Jaiswal has amassed over 500 runs in 17 matches, averaging 33.4 with a high strike rate of 161. His achievements include a T20I century and four half centuries. As India’s top order batter, he is expected to open the innings alongside captain Rohit Sharma, and his performance could be pivotal for India’s quest to win their second T20 title after 17 years.

Saim Ayub

Saim Ayub’s international cricket debut came relatively late at the age of 21, but his talent is undeniable. Despite Pakistan’s steadfast opening partnership of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, Saim has shown promise. His experience in the Caribbean Premier League, where he played a crucial role in Guyana Amazon Warriors’ victory, could be invaluable. With an ability to play unconventional big shots and a strong leg side game, Saim’s familiarity with West Indies conditions might make him a standout performer for Pakistan.

Will Jacks

Will Jacks debuted for England in 2022 as an off spinner but has since made a name for himself as a powerful batsman, particularly in the Indian Premier League. The 25 year old all rounder impressed with his batting, averaging 33 with a strike rate of 175 in the IPL. His recent performances for England have also been noteworthy, with 57 runs in two matches against Pakistan. Batting at the crucial one down position, Jacks provides England with stability and power hitting capabilities as they aim for a third T20 World Cup title.

Matheesha Pathirana

Known for his unique slingy bowling action reminiscent of Lasith Malinga, Matheesha Pathirana has the backing of his mentor. Malinga has praised Pathirana’s pace, yorkers, and fearless approach. The 21 year old has taken 28 wickets in 18 international matches, with his IPL performance further boosting his reputation. Pathirana’s ability to deliver under pressure could make him Sri Lanka’s main weapon in the tournament.

Rishad Hossain

Although not widely known, Rishad Hossain has quietly built a reputation as a reliable leg-spinning all rounder. His 15 wickets in 17 T20 matches, coupled with an economy rate of 7, make him a valuable asset in the T20 format. The 21 year old from Rangpur could find the slow Caribbean pitches to his advantage, potentially playing a crucial role in Bangladesh’s journey to the knockout stages.

These young talents have the potential to make a significant impact in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, much like their predecessors who emerged from the tournament as cricketing stars.
