Leaving behind the corporate world in search of passion and purpose is a dream for many, but for dog lover and photographer John Fabiano, it became a reality. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Fabiano traded office life for a camera and a passport, embarking on a global adventure to capture the unique bonds between humans and dogs. Since 2022, his project, Wags Around the World, has taken him to diverse destinations, from the icy landscapes of Greenland to the vibrant streets of India, showcasing the profound connections that exist between dogs and their owners.

Fabiano’s journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he discovered a passion for photography and started honing his skills. Motivated by his love for dogs, especially his own companion, Viola, he saved money and planned a trip that would allow him to explore how dogs are treated and valued in different cultures. His travels are guided by four categories: wild dogs, working dogs, purebred dogs, and what he calls “the underdogs.” Each category offers a glimpse into the diverse roles dogs play worldwide, from sled-pulling in Greenland to herding cattle in Australia.

Germany was the first stop on Fabiano’s journey, where he photographed a woman who owned ten German Shepherds. This experience set the tone for his travels, highlighting not only the relationships between dogs and humans but also the friendships he formed with fellow dog lovers. His next destination, Greenland, brought one of his most memorable moments—a photograph taken during a sled ride from Siorapaluk to Qaanaaq. This image later won first place in the documentary category of the Dog Photography Awards in 2024, marking a milestone in his new career.

India offered a different perspective as Fabiano spent time with animal activist Satish Waran, photographing the country’s resilient street dogs. In Ireland, he focused on restricted dog breeds, aiming to shed light on the challenges faced by these misunderstood animals. His travels through the United States brought attention to rescue dogs, many of whom are breeds that, with proper training, can become loyal and intelligent companions. Australia provided another unforgettable experience, with Fabiano spending 40 days driving across the country in a campervan, meeting cattle farmers and their hardworking dogs, including the Australian Kelpie.

Despite the joy his work brings, photographing dogs presents its own challenges. Fabiano often spends long hours crouching, running, and bending to capture the perfect shot, leaving him sore the next day. Unlike photographing people, which requires direction and posing, he prefers to let dogs be themselves, capturing their natural behavior and expressions. This approach reflects his belief that every dog has a unique spirit and story to tell.

One of the most emotional stops on Fabiano’s journey was Costa Rica, where he visited Territorio de Zaguates, or “Land of the Strays,” a sanctuary that provides a home to over 1,800 dogs. The experience reinforced his lifelong commitment to rescue dogs and the importance of advocating for their welfare. Yet, not all encounters were uplifting. Witnessing dogs in need, with limited ability to help, proved to be one of the most challenging aspects of his journey.

Today, Fabiano continues to travel, sharing his photographs on social media and inspiring others to appreciate the special bond between humans and dogs. His story is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, proving that happiness can be found when you take a leap of faith and pursue what truly brings you joy.
