Desdemona in Othello (1965)


Dame Maggie’s breakthrough came in 1963 when Sir Laurence Olivier offered her the role of Desdemona in Othello at the National Theatre. The play was later adapted into a film in 1965, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Despite her success, Dame Maggie admitted she found Shakespeare challenging, telling The Guardian that she performed "with great discomfort" and was terrified throughout the role.

 

Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969)


In 1969, Dame Maggie achieved international recognition with her portrayal of the eccentric and influential teacher in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Adapted from Muriel Spark’s novel, the role earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
