Google Unveils Video Based Search Feature

Google has introduced a new search feature that allows users to search the internet by filming a video. With this new video search tool, users can point their cameras at objects or scenes, ask a question, and instantly receive search results. Available on both Android and iPhone devices globally from 1700 GMT, this feature will initially support only English and will require users to activate "AI Overviews" in the Google app.

Expanding AI Integration into Search

This release follows Google's ongoing efforts to transform online search by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI). Earlier this year, the company introduced AI generated search results for certain queries, although it faced some initial challenges due to inaccuracies. Over time, Google has refined its AI capabilities to improve reliability. The latest video based search feature continues this trend of integrating AI into everyday search functions.

The Growing Role of Visuals in Search

Google's head of search, Liz Reid, explained that the new video search feature allows users to ask questions about their surroundings in real-time. For example, a person visiting an aquarium could point their camera at a group of fish, ask why they swim in unison, and receive relevant search results. Google's AI will analyze the video, identify the fish, and generate appropriate answers based on the user's question. This capability represents a significant shift in how people interact with search engines, moving from text-based queries to more immersive, visual based searches.

Industry Perspective: A Game Changer for Search

According to industry analyst Paolo Pescatore, this is a major development for Google. He noted that AI is becoming more prevalent in all aspects of technology and that visuals are a powerful medium for engaging users. Pescatore believes that AI has the potential to become more personalized and collaborative, offering users unique search experiences based on their habits and preferences.

Enhancements to Shopping and Music Search

In addition to video-based search, Google has announced improvements to its shopping features, incorporating reviews and price comparisons from different retailers to provide users with more comprehensive shopping results. The company has also launched a new music-identifying tool to compete with Apple's Shazam. The tool allows users to identify songs from websites or streaming shows without leaving the app, making it easier to discover music in real-time.

Competition in the Search Space

These new features come as Google faces growing competition in the search engine market, where it maintains a dominant share of over 90% globally. One of its rising challengers is OpenAI, which has been trialing a new search feature called SearchGPT. This AI based tool allows users to ask questions and receive search results through a chatbot. While still in limited testing, OpenAI's success, bolstered by significant investment, indicates growing competition for Google's market dominance. Google's latest innovations in video and AI-based search are likely part of its strategy to maintain its lead in the evolving search landscape.
