Government Cracks Down on Organized Crime and National Threats

Colombo, 2/23/2025 The government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on organized crime and national security threats, reinforcing its commitment to public safety and stability. Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has directed law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts in dismantling criminal networks, combating illegal drug trade, and preventing other illicit activities.
In a recent media briefing, Acting IGP Weerasuriya highlighted the urgency of addressing these security challenges. He reaffirmed that authorities would implement a zero tolerance policy against organized crime syndicates and those jeopardizing national security.
“Our mission is to ensure that no criminal organization operates with impunity. Through targeted operations, intelligence driven strategies, and enhanced surveillance, we will dismantle these networks and uphold the rule of law,” he stated.
As part of this initiative, specialized task forces have been deployed in high risk areas, and collaboration among intelligence agencies has been strengthened. Financial investigations are also underway to disrupt the economic foundations that sustain criminal enterprises, while cyber-monitoring efforts have been enhanced to track illicit online activities.
Additionally, the Acting IGP called upon the public to support law enforcement by reporting suspicious behavior, assuring them that their identities would be protected. Community engagement remains a critical component in maintaining long term security and eradicating organized crime.
