Lewis Hamilton expressed his satisfaction at ending his 12 year partnership with Mercedes on a strong note, describing the 2024 Formula 1 season as both challenging and transformative. The seven-time world champion secured a fourth place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, starting from 16th on the grid, in what marked the conclusion of a historic collaboration.
Reflecting on the season, Hamilton, 39, called it "the longest year" of his career, owing to the anticipation of his departure. “It’s like being in a relationship where you’ve told the other person you’re leaving but continue living together for a year. There were ups and downs, but we finished on a high today,” he said.
Hamilton, who moves to Ferrari in 2025, spent a poignant moment with his car after the race, celebrating with doughnuts on the pit straight before taking time to reflect beside it. “Every moment this year felt significant because I knew it was one of the last. Representing Mercedes has been the greatest honor of my life. I am proud of the team and grateful for everyone who helped build the car,” he shared.
Hamilton’s final season with Mercedes saw him clinch two race victories his first wins since the controversial end of the 2021 campaign. However, the year was not without its challenges, including a disappointing 12th place finish in Qatar just weeks before the season finale.
Despite the hurdles, Hamilton emphasized the strength of his bond with Mercedes. “There has been real love throughout this journey. The board members who supported me for so long reminded me today that I’ll always be part of the family. That means everything.”
George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate for the past three years, paid tribute to the veteran driver. “Ending the season just a second apart felt fitting,” Russell said. “I’ve learned so much from Lewis, both as a driver and as a person. He’s been an incredible role model, showing me how to use this platform to inspire others.” Russell, who will team up with 18 year old rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli in 2025, reflected on Hamilton’s influence, particularly in managing public perception. “Lewis taught me the importance of carrying yourself with dignity, especially with millions watching. His ability to inspire young fans, even in challenging moments, is a testament to his character,” Russell noted.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff lauded Hamilton’s legacy, calling the partnership a cornerstone of the team’s success. “This 1 year journey has been built on trust and shared values, qualities that are rare in today’s world. It’s a chapter we’ll cherish forever,” Wolff said. As Hamilton prepares for a new chapter with Ferrari, his time at Mercedes will be remembered as one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in Formula 1 history.
