Manager Gareth Southgate has expressed concerns about the "unusual environment" created by some England fan's reactions to the team's performances at Euro 2024, stating it is "causing an issue for the group." Despite England finishing top of Group C after a goalless draw against Slovenia, following a 1-1 draw with Denmark, Southgate's team faced boos and cup throwing from displeased supporters.
Southgate emphasized the importance of fan support, acknowledging the fan's frustration but urging them to stay with the team. He noted that an early Bukayo Saka goal was disallowed for offside, and England struggled to challenge Slovenia's goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Southgate said he understands the fan's displeasure with the team's performances, including the narrow 1-0 victory over Serbia.
Fans jeered the team at half time in Cologne, and Southgate received a negative response, including thrown cups, when he approached supporters after the match. He stated that he understands the narrative directed at him and prefers it over criticism of the players, but acknowledged it creates a challenging environment.
Southgate highlighted the need to maintain a positive atmosphere, emphasizing the team's achievements over the past few years. He expressed concern about the impact of fan's reactions on the group and reiterated the need for fan support. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford acknowledged the team has not played their best but emphasized the importance of a positive mindset. Captain Harry Kane and defender John Stones echoed these sentiments, noting improvements in the team's performance and understanding fan's frustrations.
Southgate pointed out that England has found a way to progress despite not hitting their best form, with statistics showing they ranked 19th in expected goals and 17th in shots among the 24 teams in the competition. He remains confident that "things are starting to come together" and emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and support.
