Worcester, Massachusetts – As we begin in 2025, the resolution of the new year could be a great time to change to gain self-improvement. Courtney Council, a licensed mental health counselor at Thriveworks made an statement about how to set boundaries in order to achieve health goals.
“The most important question you want to ask yourself is what is my why?”, said Council. “What is the reasoning behind this goal for me.”
While creating a fresh start to set a New Year’s Resolution, Council reported about trying to occupy yourself to attain and gain your strength.
“We always want to do a goal around health. We always want to do a goal around career,” said Council. “Some people have goals around impact, like their goal is give back and volunteer and some people have goals around where they want to see their personal development.”
Whether you are starting a healthy diet or spending less money, Council reported that to being out small and create something larger than life, your goals would last for a lifetime.
“Let’s say your end goal is you want to work out four times a week, but right now you don’t work out at all. To start the new year saying I’m going to work out four times a week is a great goal and something you totally want to do, but you want to give yourself space to build up to that,” said Council. “So building a consistent habit of maybe once a week.”
Council suggested to avoid “all or nothing approach” when working on your long-term goals. Instead, she explained to accept yourself when you make a mistake to avoid slacking in the future.
“What things let to that pivot or that barrier or that mess up and what did you learn from that,” said Council. “So you can teach yourself, listen if I go to the grocery store and I buy cookies, that is not going to help me reach my goal.”
To find help keeping you in the right direction, try to write and set your goals, and create notes on any progress.
“Start with the core. What are the things most important to you and what are the things that help you take care of you and track those things,” said Council. “So if journaling works for you, track that. If writing or running or going for a walk works for you, track that.”
Council reported that if you continue to struggle to maintain a long-term goal, You need to find your why and how you start the New Year’s Resolutions in the first place and keep going to adapt.
