A recent report from Greenpeace East Asia reveals that major Chinese tech giants Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu have made only modest strides toward achieving their renewable energy targets. This limited progress occurs against the backdrop of a significant anticipated rise in power consumption due to the increasing demand for AI and cloud computing services, which has intensified calls for more decisive climate action.

The Greenpeace report examined the renewable energy practices of the top 25 cloud providers and data center operators in China. While Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu are among the leaders in procuring renewable energy and implementing carbon reduction strategies, the report highlights considerable gaps within the industry. Notably, only five of these companies reported that their annual renewable energy use exceeded 10%, a significant improvement from just one company meeting this benchmark in 2022.

Despite these advancements, the report underscores that only eight companies have pledged to achieve 100% renewable energy usage by 2030, and just six have set goals for carbon neutrality concerning both direct and indirect emissions. Greenpeace East Asia emphasizes the urgency for the tech sector to accelerate its shift to renewable energy to meet the anticipated 160% increase in power demand for data centers by 2030, driven by the expanding AI sector.

The report calls for a more ambitious approach from the tech industry to address the challenges posed by this projected energy demand surge, highlighting the need for enhanced efforts to combat climate change.

Summary of Key Points

Limited Progress Toward Renewable Energy Goals
