In the village of Lyptsi, Ukrainian forces have successfully countered Russia’s surprise offensive. Despite initial rapid advances towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian reinforcements gradually stemmed the tide. However, the threat from the north persists, and Lyptsi remains a target.
As we navigate the ruined streets of Lyptsi with an elite Ukrainian unit, the heavy thud of nearby shells is a constant reminder of the ongoing conflict. Team members scan the sky with shotguns, on the lookout for kamikaze drones, one of the war's most effective weapons.
This unit, known as the Peaky Blinders after the popular TV series, started the war armed with shotguns and wearing civilian clothing. Led by Oleksandr, they have evolved from a group of volunteers into a battle hardened force trained by Western special forces. Now equipped with mass produced small drones, they retain their name and distinctive flat caps with their motto, "To Find and Destroy," embroidered on the back.
Oleksandr has been defending his home, transforming his strawberry fields into a battleground. The Peaky Blinders have claimed over 100 Russian casualties with their drones, which they use to drop bombs or as kamikaze devices targeting tanks and infantry.
Despite their effectiveness, Anton, Oleksandr’s brother, acknowledges that drones alone can not win the war. He stresses the need for longer range weapons to prevent future offensives. Both sides have adapted to electronic warfare, often jamming drone signals and causing the Peaky Blinders to lose several drones daily.
The Kharkiv offensive has rejuvenated the units spirits, but Oleksandr fears waning global interest. He anticipates a prolonged conflict, potentially lasting years or decades, and emphasizes the need for significant Western support to push Russian forces back to the border.
The latest Russian offensive in Kharkiv raises questions about Ukraine’s ability to win the war. It highlights deficiencies in Western support and the strain on Ukraine armed forces. Despite ongoing challenges, Ukraine’s defiance and willingness to fight remain strong, though there is a growing recognition that military means alone may not be sufficient to end the conflict.
