US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted a US “bridging proposal” aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza. The next move is now in Hamas' hands, Blinken added, following a meeting with Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, which Netanyahu described as “positive.” Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to a US proposal addressing both the release of hostages held by Hamas and Israel’s security concerns.

Blinken emphasized the urgency of finalizing a ceasefire, warning that delays could result in further loss of life and missed opportunities for peace. The US hopes for a resolution within the week, but both Israeli and Hamas leadership have expressed skepticism. Blinken now plans to travel to Egypt and Qatar to push negotiations forward, with Israel set to send a delegation to Cairo for renewed talks.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens as Israeli military operations continue. Israel claims to have killed dozens of Hamas militants and destroyed key compounds and tunnel networks. Palestinian media report civilian casualties from airstrikes.

The conflict began after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, leading to Israel’s military response. The fighting has claimed over 40,130 lives in Gaza, according to the territory's health ministry, which is run by Hamas. A temporary ceasefire in November resulted in the release of 105 hostages and 240 Palestinian prisoners. Israel reports that 111 hostages are still held by Hamas, with 39 presumed dead.

Negotiations are ongoing, with the US hoping to secure a deal based on a phased approach: an initial six week ceasefire and hostage exchange, followed by the release of all hostages and a permanent cessation of hostilities, and ultimately a reconstruction plan for Gaza. However, disagreements remain, particularly around Israel’s military presence in Gaza and the terms of the prisoner exchange. Despite these obstacles, the US remains committed to bridging the gaps and pushing the deal to completion.
