Lea Pericoli, a celebrated Italian tennis player from the 1950s and 60s, has passed away at the age of 89. Pericoli, known for her athletic prowess and unique style on the court, reached the last 16 of the French Open twice and the Wimbledon championships three times during her illustrious career.

 

Tennis and Fashion Icon

 

Born in Milan on March 22, 1935, Pericoli was Italy’s number one tennis player for 14 years, from 1959 to 1976. She was a 27 time national champion, with her skills and determination earning her a lasting legacy in Italian sports. Beyond her achievements in tennis, she gained fame for her flamboyant contest outfits adorned with feathers and fur, solidifying her status as a style icon in the tennis world.

 

A Lifelong Influence on Tennis

 

Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, referred to Pericoli as "a mother to all of us," highlighting her enduring influence in Italian tennis. Her legacy was further honored by current world number one Jannik Sinner, who shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, recalling a special moment with Pericoli. Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal also paid tribute, thanking her for her contributions to the sport.

 

A Resilient Life

 

After retiring from professional tennis, Pericoli transitioned into a successful career as a television presenter and journalist. She also battled cancer twice, in 1973 and again in 2012, showcasing her resilience both on and off the court.

 

Pericoli will be remembered not only as a trailblazer in Italian tennis but also as a symbol of elegance and strength, both in her sport and in life.
