Hollywood icons Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are ending their marriage after two years together. Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, as revealed by documents obtained by us. The couple, famously dubbed "Bennifer" by the media, got married in a Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022, followed by a larger celebration in Georgia the following month. Their love story began on the set of the 2003 film Gigli, and they initially planned to marry that year. However, they called off their engagement in early 2004.
Nearly 20 years later, they rekindled their romance, with Lopez expressing in 2022 that "Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient," after their Las Vegas wedding announcement. We reached out to their representatives for comments.
According to the court filing, Lopez or her attorney must serve Affleck with a copy of her divorce petition. Reports suggest that Lopez, who had legally adopted Affleck's surname, did not include details of any prenuptial agreement in the divorce petition.
Both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, are required by the court to disclose their financial information, including income, expenses, properties, and debts. They must continue to update any financial changes "until there is a final agreement about all financial issues in your case." Lopez has been given 60 days to submit her financial disclosure, after which Affleck will have 60 days to provide his. Failure to comply with these requirements could lead to court imposed penalties.
Speculation about their relationship has been swirling for months, fueled by reports of the couple listing their Beverly Hills mansion for sale at $65 million (£50 million) and being spotted separately without their wedding rings.
Affleck, a two time Oscar winner, was previously married to actress Jennifer Garner, whom he met on the set of the 2001 film Pearl Harbor. They divorced in 2015 after ten years of marriage and share three children. Lopez has been married four times, first to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa from 1997-98, then to her former back up dancer Cris Judd from 2001-03, and to singer Marc Anthony, with whom she has twins, from 2004-14. She was also once engaged to former New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
