Harris Faces Criticism Over Joint Interview Decision

Three weeks after being officially named the Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris is set to fulfill her promise of a major sit down interview, albeit not solo. On Thursday night, she will appear for her first significant interview since the nomination, accompanied by her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The interview, airing at 9:00 PM EDT, comes after much anticipation and scrutiny regarding Harris’s reluctance to face the media alone.

Harris’s decision to share the spotlight with Walz has sparked criticism, particularly from her opponents. Scott Jennings, a former special assistant to President George W. Bush, described the move as "incredibly weak" and indicative of a "troubling lack of confidence" in her political abilities. This critique is fueled by the perception that Harris, after avoiding the grueling process of a Democratic primary, may now be shying away from the intense scrutiny typically faced by presidential candidates.

Navigating the Complexities of Harris’s Candidacy

Supporters of Harris, however, argue that her approach is strategic, given the unprecedented circumstances of her candidacy following President Joe Biden’s sudden exit from the race. Chicago based Democratic strategist Peter Giangreco defended the timing, saying, "The cadence has been right." He emphasized that Harris’s careful rollout winning the nomination, selecting a running mate, unveiling her economic plan, and now engaging in media interviews is a calculated effort to maintain momentum and control the narrative.

Joint interviews with a vice presidential running mate are not uncommon. Historical precedents include Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s 2008 interview on 60 Minutes, as well as Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine’s joint appearance in 2016. Yet, Harris’s choice to bring Walz into the mix has drawn attention because of her limited media engagement since Biden passed the torch to her. Critics argue that her recent interactions with the press, often limited to brief and controlled settings, have only amplified Republican accusations that she is avoiding the rigorous questioning that comes with a solo interview.

Adding to the controversy, Harris has shifted her stance on several key issues since her 2019 presidential primary campaign, which could lead to questions about her consistency. She has backed away from her previous support for Medicare for All and a fracking ban and now endorses a bipartisan border bill that includes funding for a border wall a position she once deemed "un American." Such shifts could open her up to accusations of being a "flip flopper," a damaging label for any candidate still working to solidify their public identity.

Strategic Benefits and Risks of a Joint Appearance

By opting for a joint interview, the Harris campaign may be aiming to share the pressure and difficult questions between the two candidates, ensuring a united front in presenting their policies. Giangreco anticipates that the duo will focus on their economic plan, a strategy Harris first outlined during a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina. This approach could also help contrast Walz with his Republican counterpart, JD Vance, whom Walz has labeled as "weird."

Despite the potential advantages, the true impact of this joint interview will only be clear once it airs. Harris’s performance in high pressure interviews has been mixed. A 2021 interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, where she struggled with questions about her role in the administration’s border policy, was widely criticized. However, in a more recent appearance with Anderson Cooper, Harris confidently defended Biden during a difficult debate, showing poise under pressure.

For the Harris campaign, the success of this interview could be pivotal. If she and Walz manage to deliver a strong, cohesive message, it could help dispel some of the criticisms and reinforce the momentum they’ve been building. As Republican strategist Chip Felkel noted, the campaign needs

to prove that Harris can handle the pressure and emerge unscathed from tough questioning. "They just need to be able to say, 'See, we told you,'" Felkel remarked, suggesting that a successful performance could quiet critics and allow the Harris Walz ticket to keep moving forward with confidence.

Ultimately, this interview represents a critical moment for Kamala Harris as she seeks to reassure both her supporters and skeptics that she is ready for the challenges ahead. With the eyes of the nation on her, Harris must demonstrate not only her political acumen but also her ability to lead and inspire, ensuring that this high stakes interview solidifies her position as a formidable candidate in the upcoming election.
