Monarchists Criticize Australian Leaders for "Snub" as Republic Debate Resurfaces
As King Charles prepares for his visit to Australia, a row has erupted over the absence of state premiers from a reception in Canberra to welcome the monarch. The leaders of six Australian states New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania have cited prior commitments, sparking accusations of disrespect from monarchists.
Bev McArthur of the Australian Monarchist League expressed frustration, calling the decision an "insult" and urging the premiers to set aside their political views and welcome the King. The controversy has reignited discussions about Australia’s future as a constitutional monarchy, with republicans pushing for the end of the King’s role as head of state.
Despite the absence of the premiers, the event will feature representatives from all states, including their governors. The King and Queen will also meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the visit, which marks the King's largest international trip since his cancer diagnosis.
The Australian Republic Movement has labeled the royal visit as a "farewell tour," advocating for an Australian head of state. However, the King has affirmed that the decision of whether Australia becomes a republic remains in the hands of its citizens. After the Australian visit, the royal couple will head to Samoa for the Commonwealth heads of government meeting.
