Incident Disrupts Final Celebrations of Paris 2024 Games
A man was arrested on Sunday for climbing the Eiffel Tower just hours before the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, according to Paris police.
The individual was spotted scaling the iconic landmark at approximately 14:45 local time (13:45 BST). Police promptly intervened and took him into custody. Details regarding the man’s motive and nationality have not yet been disclosed.
Videos circulating on social media show the shirtless man climbing the tower, just above the Olympic rings that have adorned the structure throughout the summer games. Another video captures the moment when the man, with his hands cuffed behind his back, is escorted away by police. He is heard telling a bystander, "Bloody warm, innit?"
Reports from the Associated Press indicated that French police evacuated the area surrounding the Eiffel Tower during the incident. Similarly, reported that the tower itself was evacuated, citing police sources. However, these reports have not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the evacuations were still in place as of 16:00.
While the Eiffel Tower was a focal point of the grand opening ceremony of the Olympics, it was not expected to play a role in the closing ceremony later that evening.
