Manchester City have secured the services of former Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema on a free transfer. The 27 year old, who holds the record as the all time leading goalscorer in the Women's Super League (WSL), departed from Arsenal at the end of June following the expiration of her contract. Despite her impressive record of 125 goals in 172 appearances, Arsenal opted not to offer Miedema a new deal.
The Netherlands international has been plagued by injuries over the past two seasons, managing only eight WSL appearances due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee sustained in December 2022. Miedema has now signed a three year contract with Manchester City. She expressed her excitement, stating, "The reason I chose City is because they have the same ambitions as me they want to win the league and titles. I’ve always said I want to play with the best players in the world and I think City have got that."
Miedema acknowledged her limited playtime recently but remains optimistic about her future contributions, saying, "I think and hope my best years are still to come. I hope I'm going to be able to help the team as much as I can do." She emphasized her desire for daily challenges in training and competitive matches, making the decision to join City an easy one.
Miedema's Career and Impact on Arsenal
Vivianne Miedema joined Arsenal in 2017 from Bayern Munich, making a significant impact during her tenure. She led Arsenal to a WSL title in 2019 and secured three League Cup titles in 2018, 2023, and 2024. Known for her natural goal scoring abilities, Miedema has transitioned from a number nine to a number ten in recent years.
Despite her recent injuries, Miedema's departure from Arsenal raised eyebrows, given her status as one of the greatest players in WSL history. At 27, there is widespread belief that she can return to top form.
Manchester City's Strengthened Attack
Manchester City's acquisition of Miedema adds to an already formidable attacking line up, which includes last season's Golden Boot winner Khadija Shaw and England international Lauren Hemp. The team also made headlines last season by breaking their women's transfer record to sign Netherlands attacking midfielder Jill Roord.
City narrowly missed out on the WSL title on goal difference on the final day of the 2023/24 season, finishing behind champions Chelsea, who have dominated the league with five consecutive titles. This high profile signing of Miedema signals City's strong intent to challenge Chelsea and claim the league title in the upcoming season.
