Matthew Macfadyen Reflects on His Role as Mr. Darcy in 2005's "Pride & Prejudice

Matthew Macfadyen, renowned for his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s "Pride & Prejudice," has recently shared his candid thoughts on the experience. In a recent interview with "CBS Mornings," the British actor revealed that his time working on the film was not as enjoyable as many might assume.

Macfadyen, who starred opposite Keira Knightley in the critically acclaimed film, admitted that he did not fully appreciate the role. “I didn’t really [enjoy it],” he confessed. “There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about it.” His reflections suggest a degree of dissatisfaction with his performance and the experience as a whole.

The actor further elaborated on his discontent by expressing a sense of being miscast. “I felt a bit miscast, like, ‘I’m not dishy enough,’” Macfadyen said. Despite these reservations, he acknowledges that the film was ultimately successful and well received.

This self assessment is at odds with the widespread adoration of Macfadyen’s portrayal. The 2005 adaptation of "Pride & Prejudice" remains a beloved classic, and Macfadyen’s performance as the iconic Mr. Darcy has been praised by audiences and critics alike. The actor’s comments have elicited a strong reaction from fans who continue to celebrate his role in the film.

Beyond his work in "Pride & Prejudice," Macfadyen has enjoyed considerable success in recent years. He is well known for his role in the popular TV series "Succession," and he is currently promoting his latest film, "Deadpool & Wolverine," which is set to be released in theaters this Friday.

Macfadyen’s role as Mr. Darcy continues to leave a lasting impression, as he still frequently encounters fans who recognize him from the film. Reflecting on this, he remarked, “Probably the most flattering thing that happens to me now is people say, ‘Were you Mr. Darcy?’ It’s a good 20 years later. So I think, ‘I can’t be aging that badly.’” As Macfadyen embarks on new projects and continues to build his career, his portrayal of Mr. Darcy remains a significant and celebrated part of his legacy.
