A new Conservative MP received mixed reactions after expressing concern about a traffic cone placed on a statue of one of Britain's most renowned political figures. Ben Obese Jecty shared his disappointment on Facebook, noting that the cone was still atop the statue of Oliver Cromwell in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. While some Facebook users dismissed his concern as trivial, visitors to St Ives supported Obese Jecty’s stance, calling the cone placement disrespectful.

Obese Jecty, MP for the Huntingdon constituency, which includes St Ives, posted on Facebook "In St. Ives this morning and it’s disappointing to see the statue of Oliver Cromwell with a traffic cone still on top of it. If we want our town centre to thrive, we have to address the small things that could make it a better place for people to visit as well as the bigger issues."

Cromwell, born in Huntingdon and a resident of St Ives in the 1630s, is a significant historical figure due to his role in the English Civil War. Locals reported the cone had been placed on the statue's head in recent days.

While several Facebook users found Obese Jecty's concern amusing, three visitors to St Ives supported his view. Ann Cook from Newark, Nottinghamshire, stated that the cone lowered the town’s tone and called for its removal. Margaret Lloyd from Dagenham, East London, and David Cook, a retired welder, also found the cone disrespectful and urged its prompt removal.

St Ives Town Council indicated that the statue was an asset of Huntingdonshire District Council which is responsible for removing the cone.
