Leaders in north east England have called for calm following days of unrest, during which police and businesses were targeted in riots. The seven council leaders from the region emphasized that it was "business as usual" despite the violence that broke out in Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Hartlepool.

The unrest followed the tragic attack in Southport, where three young girls were fatally stabbed last week. In response, the region's mayor, Kim McGuinness, urged people to stop spreading "unfounded" rumors on social media.

On Wednesday evening, thousands gathered in Newcastle's West End for a largely peaceful protest, many participants waving anti-racism banners. In a joint statement, the leaders expressed their determination that the actions of a minority would not disrupt daily life, praising the peaceful demonstrations as "truly a sight to behold."

Ms. McGuinness, along with the leaders of Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead, and Northumberland councils, vowed to continue working with communities, police forces, and partners to maintain peace. They assured the public that a robust police presence had been prepared, with officer leave canceled and resources redeployed to ensure visibility and safety in the community.

"Everyone has a part to play in ensuring calm and peace prevail," the statement read.

Due to concerns over potential unrest, some pubs and shops closed early on Wednesday. Metro operator Nexus reported that all services were operating normally on Saturday, though Monument station remained closed with the possibility of reopening later in the day. Additionally, Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema and the Lit & Phil library announced closures for Saturday.

The council leaders' statement concluded by reaffirming the region's reputation as a friendly and welcoming place, with diverse communities. They expressed gratitude to the police for their efforts in keeping neighborhoods and businesses safe and thanked the community and partners for their ongoing work in fostering unity.
