The Historic and Modern City of Paris

Paris, the capital of France, is located in the north central part of the country along the Seine River, approximately 375 km from its mouth on the English Channel. The site of Paris has been inhabited since around 7600 BCE, and over the centuries, the city has grown from its original settlement on the Ile de la Cite to extend far beyond the banks of the Seine. Paris sits in the heart of the fertile Paris Basin, a region known for its agricultural richness. With its long history, Paris has developed into one of the most influential and attractive cities in the world.

A Global Hub of Culture and Commerce

Paris has earned a global reputation as a hub for business, commerce, education, and culture. The city is renowned for its contributions to gastronomy, haute couture, literature, painting, and intellectual life. Known as the "City of Light" since the Enlightenment, Paris remains an important center for learning and intellectual discussions.

Over time, the city has maintained a circular shape, and its boundaries expanded to incorporate nearby towns and suburbs. Today, Paris is divided into 20 administrative districts, called arrondissements, each with its own character and governance.

Geography and Natural Surroundings

Paris is positioned at the center of the Ile de France region, a landscape shaped by the Seine, Oise, and Marne rivers. The city's urban areas are surrounded by vast forests of beech and oak, known as the "lungs of Paris," which help cleanse the air in this heavily industrialized region. Paris proper is a relatively compact city, with no area more than 10 km from Notre Dame Cathedral. The elevation of the city ranges from 130 meters at Montmartre in the north to 26 meters in the southwest. The surrounding heights have traditionally marked the limits of the city.
