Historic Global Success
Pixar's Inside Out 2 has shattered box office records, bringing in an estimated $295 million (£232.6 million) worldwide over the weekend. This makes it the strongest global opening for an animated film ever, according to parent company Disney.
North American Triumph
In North America, the film achieved approximately $155 million in ticket sales, surpassing Dune: Part Two to claim the top box office opening weekend of the year. This represents a significant win for cinemas, which have been struggling with underwhelming box office returns for many new releases this year.
Comparative Performance
Inside Out 2's first weekend performance was significantly stronger than its predecessor, which earned $90 million in its opening weekend and eventually grossed $858 million globally. This sequel now holds the title for the second best opening for Pixar in the North American market, trailing only behind the 2018 release of The Incredibles 2.
Boost for Pixar
The blockbuster opening is a much needed boost for Pixar, following several recent releases that had relatively weak openings. Inside Out 2, the first sequel to the 2015 Oscar winning original, continues the story of Riley's emotions, this time exploring new themes such as envy and anxiety.
Industry Impact
Inside Out 2's remarkable opening provides a bright spot in what has otherwise been a slow start to the summer for film studios. The period from the first weekend in May to the start of September typically sees a significant portion of annual ticket sales. However, strikes by actors and screenwriters last year resulted in fewer films being ready for release this year. Additionally, the industry has faced competition from streaming services, impacting both content and customer numbers.
Decline in Ticket Sales
According to media market research company Comscore, the number of cinema tickets sold in North America so far this year is down by almost a quarter compared to the same period in 2023. Inside Out 2's success offers a glimmer of hope for the industry amid these challenges.
