Police in Germany are actively searching for a suspect following a mass stabbing at a festival in Solingen on Friday night. The attack, which occurred during celebrations marking the city's 650th anniversary, resulted in three deaths and eight injuries, with five victims in serious condition.
The incident unfolded in the central square of Solingen, where thousands had gathered for the festival, which was intended to celebrate diversity. Despite a large police presence, including a helicopter, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not yet disclosed a motive or identified the suspect.
On Saturday, police reported that the number of seriously injured had increased from four to five. Efforts are ongoing to locate the assailant, with both victims and witnesses being questioned. Police have deployed a significant team to aid in the search.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed deep shock at the attack, stating, “We are deeply shocked by the brutal attack on the city festival in Solingen. Our security authorities are doing everything they can to catch the perpetrator and understand the motive behind this attack.” She also conveyed condolences to the victims' families.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one individual recounting how the attack unfolded near a live music stage. Eyewitness Lars Breitzke initially mistook the incident for a drunken fall before realizing the gravity of the situation as he saw multiple people injured.
The attack highlights ongoing concerns about knife violence in Germany. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach expressed hopes for the recovery of the injured and for the swift capture of the perpetrator. Regional Premier Hendrik Wüst and other officials offered support to the victims and praised emergency responders.
The festival, which was attended by approximately 10,000 people, has been canceled, and the city of Solingen is in mourning. Mayor Tim Oliver Kurzbach expressed profound sadness, emphasizing the shock of the attack on what was meant to be a celebratory occasion. The incident adds to a series of recent knife attacks in Germany, sparking further debate about rising knife violence and public safety.
