ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has withdrawn its formal invitation to Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, one of two rival Emirs in Kano State, following a deadly clash during Sallah celebrations. Instead, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) to personally obtain Sanusi’s statement in Kano, amid escalating tensions over the emirate dispute.

Why the Invitation Was Recalled

In a press release issued Friday, Force spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that the initial summons—meant to secure Sanusi’s account of the March 30 violence—was canceled after consultations with stakeholders to avoid "politicization" of the investigation.

The move comes after Sanusi, a former Central Bank governor and reinstated Emir of Kano, defied a prior agreement brokered by police to avoid a Durbar horse procession—a traditional Sallah event—due to fears of unrest. Despite the pact, Sanusi rode on horseback after Eid prayers, sparking violent confrontations that left one person dead and several injured.

How the Crisis Unfolded

Pre-Sallah intelligence had warned that both Sanusi and deposed Emir Alhaji Ado Bayero planned separate Durbars, risking clashes between their supporters. The IGP deployed DIG Abubakar Sadiq to mediate, securing a deal that neither leader would participate in the festival.

However, Sanusi’s procession—reportedly escorted by vigilantes—triggered a youth-led backlash, culminating in the killing of Usman Sagiru. Police later arrested suspects linked to the violence, prompting Sanusi’s now-withdrawn invitation.

Police Vow Neutral Probe Amid Rising Tensions

The NPF emphasized its commitment to an impartial investigation, stating, “All individuals found culpable will be brought to justice.” The FID’s deployment signals a shift toward discreet fact-finding, though critics question whether authorities can navigate the politically charged feud without backlash.

Kano has been a flashpoint since 2024, when Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Sanusi, dethroning Bayero—a move contested in court and by federal allies. Analysts warn the emirate conflict risks further destabilizing Nigeria’s northwest, already plagued by banditry and ethnic strife.
