On April 20, 2018, the music world was struck by the tragic loss of Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii. At just 28 years old, the Swedish DJ and producer took his own life while on holiday in Oman, leaving behind a profound legacy and a grieving family. For Klas Bergling, the loss of his son Tim is a daily struggle. "I miss him every minute," Klas shares during a heartfelt video call. "I talk to him every day, but sometimes I get angry. Why did you leave us?"

The Meteoric Rise and Struggles of a Millennial Superstar

Avicii's journey to stardom began in 2011 with the breakout hit "Levels," which joyously sampled Etta James's "Good Feeling" refrain. The song propelled the 22 year old to international fame, marking the rise of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and earning him a staggering $250,000 per night on tour. Despite his success, Tim's anxiety and health issues, exacerbated by a grueling tour schedule and dependence on alcohol and opioids, began to take a toll. His 2013 hospitalization for pancreatitis marked the start of a cycle of health problems and addiction.

The Bergling family seeks to honor Tim's memory by showcasing the person behind the Avicii persona. Through the Tim Bergling Foundation, established in 2019, and a new picture book curated by Klas, they aim to highlight Tim's struggles and humanity. Klas reflects on Tim's authenticity, which resonated deeply with fans. "Tim meant a lot to young people because he was honest about his struggles," Klas explains. The foundation's efforts include supporting mental health initiatives and raising awareness about the pressures faced by young artists.

A Call for Change, Ensuring Artist Wellbeing

In the wake of Tim's passing, Klas Bergling advocates for systemic changes in the music industry to prioritize artist wellbeing. He emphasizes the need for better support systems, including mandatory mental health training for managers and agents. Klas highlights positive changes, particularly among Swedish managers, but stresses the need for comprehensive measures. The Tim Bergling Foundation's funding of Sweden's national suicide prevention hotline and the push for legislative action underscore the family's commitment to preventing similar tragedies.

Reflecting on Tim's enduring influence, Klas notes, "Even if he's not with us anymore, he is still very much with us." The Avicii Arena in Stockholm and ongoing tribute concerts serve as lasting reminders of Tim's impact on music and mental health awareness.
