American rookie Matt McCarty earned his maiden PGA Tour victory at the inaugural Black Desert Championship in Utah, securing his place at next year’s Masters and PGA Championship. The 26 year old left hander, in his debut season on the tour, sealed a three-shot win over Germany’s Stephan Jaeger, finishing 23 under par with a final round score of 67.
McCarty, who secured his PGA Tour card earlier this year by winning three events on the Korn Ferry Tour, became the first player since Jason Gore in 2005 to win on both tours in the same season. "It’s been an unbelievable few months," McCarty said. "It was a lot of fun, and a pretty surreal moment."
Heading into the final round with a two stroke lead over Jaeger, Joe Highsmith, Kevin Streelman, and Harris English, McCarty's lead was reduced to one with five holes left. However, an eagle on the par four 14th proved decisive, allowing McCarty to extend his lead and finish with two birdies and a bogey, celebrating his victory with his caddie and family.
Kevin Streelman and Lucas Glover tied for third, finishing at 19-under.
