Samsung is aiming to attract fitness and health tracking technology enthusiasts with its latest wearable device, the Galaxy Ring. Launched during the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, the Galaxy Ring is the newest addition to Samsung's ecosystem of devices, which the company claims is being "supercharged" with artificial intelligence (AI).

Smart rings, equipped with tiny sensors to monitor various health metrics, have so far been a niche product. However, their recent usage by the England men's football team has brought them into the spotlight. By entering this market, Samsung becomes the largest tech company to do so, potentially expanding the appeal of smart rings.

Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight, describes Samsung's product choice as an "interesting bet." His company estimates that the global market for smart rings will reach approximately four million units by 2025. While this figure is modest compared to the anticipated 250 million smartwatches sold, Wood acknowledges the potential impact.

Other analysts believe Samsung's entry into the smart ring market could help popularize the product. Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst for market research firm IDC, suggests that Samsung's Galaxy Ring could be many consumers' first experience with a smart ring, significantly boosting its market awareness.

James Kitto, vice president and head of Samsung's mobile division in the UK and Ireland, hailed the ring's launch as a "huge moment" for the company. He emphasized the Galaxy Ring as Samsung's "smallest and most discrete product yet," offering accurate 24/7 health, wellness, and sleep tracking.

Smart rings can monitor health indicators such as heart rate, sleep patterns, and menstrual cycles. Currently, the market is dominated by the Finnish health tech firm Oura. In recent years, smart rings have become a fitness tech fashion staple among celebrities, including Kim Kardashian. Analysts suggest that due to their smaller size and sleeker appearance, smart rings could become a successor to smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Google Pixel Watch.

Smartwatches typically have more sensors, enabling them to provide a broader range of health data. However, "less intrusive" smart rings offer a convenient, comfortable, and stylish alternative for those who prefer not to wear a bulky smartwatch, particularly overnight to track sleep patterns, Jeronimo adds.

The Galaxy Ring will be compatible with Android phones running Android 11 or above, provided users have the Samsung Health app. Some AI features, such as obtaining an Energy Score and personalized suggestions based on user data, will only be available on Galaxy devices.

Dr. Efpraxia Zamani, an associate professor of information systems at Durham University, noted that the Galaxy Ring, as part of a broader ecosystem of products providing health and wellbeing insights, could be an attractive offering for many consumers. However, she cautioned users to remain vigilant about what health data is being collected, how it is used, and where it is shared.

Zamani highlighted potential privacy concerns, particularly as data from multiple devices could be aggregated, amplifying both positive and negative impacts. The collection of data related to menstrual cycles has been particularly controversial. Last year, the UK's Information Commissioner's Office launched a review of period and fertility tracking apps over data security concerns.
