Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s political landscape has been rocked by explosive allegations of sexual harassment and victimization leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. The accusations, made during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show, have ignited a firestorm of reactions, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and raising critical questions about the treatment of women in Nigerian politics.

Allegations of Inappropriate Advances

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan detailed a disturbing encounter with Akpabio, which she claims occurred on December 8, 2023, during a visit to his residence in Akwa Ibom State. The visit coincided with their shared birthday celebrations. According to her account, while touring Akpabio’s home, he held her hand and suggested they spend “quality moments” together, implying that such interactions would grant her privileges as a first-term senator. Uncomfortable with the remarks, Akpoti-Uduaghan withdrew from the situation.

Claims of Victimization

Following her refusal, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleges that Akpabio engaged in actions aimed at undermining her position in the Senate. She described her ordeal as akin to “a student being punished by a lecturer for refusing to sleep with him,” suggesting that her rejection of his advances led to political repercussions. These alleged retaliatory actions included the reassignment of her seat in the Senate chamber, which she protested during a session last Thursday.

Senate Chamber Confrontation

The tension between the two senators came to a head during a Senate session last week when Akpabio ordered the sergeants-at-arms to remove Akpoti-Uduaghan from the chamber after she protested the reassignment of her seat. The incident, which was captured on video, highlighted the growing discord between the two lawmakers and brought the allegations into the public eye.

Reactions and Calls for Investigation

The allegations have sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter, emphasizing the seriousness of the accusations and their potential impact on the integrity of the National Assembly. “These allegations must not be swept under the carpet. The Senate must demonstrate its commitment to justice and equality,” said Comrade Blessing Akinlosotu, Executive Director of NCSCN.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also weighed in, urging President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take the allegations seriously. “The dignity of the Senate must be upheld, and female legislators must be protected from harassment and intimidation,” Atiku stated. He called for a transparent investigation to ensure that justice is served.

Akpabio’s Response

In response to the allegations, Senate President Akpabio has denied any wrongdoing. His wife, Unoma Akpabio, has come to his defense, describing him as a disciplined and respectful individual. She dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims as “unfounded and a figment of her imagination,” vowing to take legal action against the senator for defamation.

Historical Context

This is not the first time Akpabio has faced such allegations. In 2020, Joy Nunieh, former acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), accused Akpabio of sexual harassment during his tenure as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. Akpabio denied those allegations, describing them as “false, malicious, and libelous.” The recurrence of similar accusations has raised questions about accountability and the culture of impunity in Nigeria’s political sphere.

Implications for Nigerian Politics

The unfolding situation has far-reaching implications for Nigerian politics, particularly regarding the treatment of women in leadership positions. The allegations have reignited debates about gender equality, accountability, and the need for robust mechanisms to address sexual harassment in the workplace, including within legislative bodies.

As investigations proceed, the outcomes could have significant consequences for the Senate’s leadership and the broader fight against sexual harassment in Nigeria. The case also underscores the challenges faced by women in politics, who often navigate a hostile environment while striving to serve their constituents.

What’s Next?

The Senate and relevant authorities are under pressure to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations. The public and political observers alike await further developments, hoping for a resolution that upholds justice and maintains the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative processes.

For now, the allegations against Senate President Akpabio serve as a stark reminder of the need for systemic reforms to protect women in politics and ensure that Nigeria’s democratic institutions reflect the values of equality and respect.
