DreamWorks Animation has officially announced the highly anticipated return of Shrek, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz set to reprise their iconic roles. The beloved green ogre will return to the big screen for the first time in 16 years. While the plot for Shrek 5 remains under wraps, Myers will once again voice the titular character, Diaz will return as Princess Fiona, and Murphy will reprise his role as the lovable Donkey.
The announcement was made on the social media platform X, where DreamWorks Animation revealed, "Not too Far, Far Away... Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz." The original Shrek film, released in 2001, was a monumental success, winning the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and grossing $487 million worldwide.
Following the success of the original, Shrek 2 was released in 2004, Shrek The Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. Shrek 5 will mark the seventh film in the franchise, which also includes two spin off films centered around Antonio Banderas' character, Puss in Boots, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It is currently unknown if Banderas will return for Shrek 5.
In a recent interview with Collider, Eddie Murphy hinted at the possibility of a Donkey spin-off movie. He mentioned that work on Shrek 5 began "months ago" and shared that he has already recorded the first act, with plans to complete the film within the year. Murphy excitedly stated, "Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie."
With the original cast back on board and new adventures on the horizon, fans can look forward to another enchanting journey in the world of Shrek when the film hits theaters in 2026.
