Unprecedented Levels of Intimidation and Threats

The House of Commons Speaker has revealed that intimidation and threats towards Members of Parliament are at unprecedented levels. Sir Lindsay Hoyle highlighted that MPs face not only physical threats but also constant cyber attacks from "foreign actors" aiming to disrupt the work of the Commons. This alarming situation has made improving security in the House of Commons a top priority for the next five years.

Speaker's Commitment to MP Safety

In his first interview since being re elected as Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle expressed grave concern over the current level of intimidation against MPs, describing it as worse than anything he has ever seen. Recalling an incident in February when he allowed a vote on Labour's Gaza ceasefire motion to protect MPs' safety, Sir Lindsay emphasized the importance of allowing MPs to vote without intimidation. "Democracy matters to me," he said, "and the safety of MPs is a constant worry that keeps me awake at night."

Continuous Cyber Attacks from Foreign Actors

Sir Lindsay also addressed the persistent cyber attacks from foreign actors targeting Parliament. He praised the staff for their efforts in combating these disruptions and stressed the importance of working closely with all relevant agencies to stay ahead of such threats. "None of this should happen," he stated, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of MPs.

Addressing Past Misconduct

The previous parliament faced numerous issues, including suspensions of MPs, lobbying scandals, and bullying allegations. Sir Lindsay Hoyle emphasized the need for improved behaviour in Parliament, viewing the new parliament as an opportunity for a fresh start. He called for all parties to support efforts to enhance standards, aiming to create a "better" and "nicer Parliament." "How we treat each other in Parliament is reflected by the public," he stated.

Ensuring Government Accountability

Sir Lindsay highlighted the importance of holding the government accountable, especially with Labour's 172 seat majority. He warned that he would "fall out" with Prime Minister Keir Starmer if significant announcements bypassed Commons scrutiny. Hoyle mentioned receiving an "assurance" that major announcements would be made on the floor of the House when the Commons is in session.

Supporting Smaller Parties

After being re elected unopposed by MPs in the traditional speaker's election, Sir Lindsay promised to protect the rights of smaller parties, ensuring they have a fair chance to speak. This commitment underscores his dedication to maintaining a balanced and inclusive parliamentary environment.

Modernizing Parliamentary Procedures

Sir Lindsay expressed support for Labour's plans to modernize the Commons, including the formation of a committee to review parliamentary procedures. He stated, "Modernization is good," and emphasized the importance of balancing tradition with modern methods of conducting parliamentary business. "It’s about keeping tradition, but moving into a modern way of delivering," he added.
