Embracing Sustainable Practices

Elmbridge Borough Council in Surrey is urging its residents to participate in the global Plastic Free July challenge, an initiative aimed at reducing single use plastic waste. This annual campaign, which has garnered over 100 million participants in 190 countries, encourages individuals to adopt more sustainable habits. The council is promoting simple yet impactful actions such as avoiding excessive food packaging, shopping at refill stores, and using reusable shopping bags.

A council spokesperson emphasized the accessibility of the movement, stating, "Why don’t you join the movement this year? The good news is anyone can get involved by making small changes." By incorporating these practices into daily routines, residents can contribute to a significant reduction in plastic waste and help mitigate the environmental impact on future generations.

Practical Tips for Reducing Plastic Use

On a local level, Elmbridge Borough Council provides several practical suggestions for residents to minimize their plastic consumption. One recommendation is to switch to glass bottled milk deliveries, reducing the need for plastic containers. Additionally, the council advises avoiding cling film by using alternatives like beeswax wraps, and consistently carrying reusable coffee cups and water bottles to limit single use plastic usage.

Further suggestions include eliminating disposable razors, glitter, plastic balloons, and shower gel from daily use. Instead, the council encourages residents to explore repair cafes as an alternative to purchasing new items, fostering a culture of reuse and sustainability. These steps not only help reduce plastic pollution but also promote a more environmentally conscious community in Elmbridge. By adopting these measures and participating in Plastic Free July, Surrey residents can play a crucial role in addressing the global plastic pollution crisis.
