Rafael Nadal, the 22 time Grand Slam champion, has announced his retirement from professional tennis at the end of the season. The 38 year old will represent Spain in his final competition during the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga next month.
Nadal, who has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, had hinted last year that he might step away from the sport by the close of 2024. In a video message released on Thursday, he confirmed his decision, stating "I am retiring from professional tennis. The last two years, in particular, have been challenging, and I haven't been able to play without physical limitations."
With his retirement, Nadal concludes a legendary career as the second most successful men’s singles player, trailing only Novak Djokovic. Nicknamed the 'King of Clay,' Nadal holds the record for the most French Open titles, with 14 victories, winning an extraordinary 112 of 116 matches at Roland Garros. No other player has claimed as many Grand Slam singles titles at a single tournament.
In addition to his French Open dominance, Nadal is a four time US Open champion and a two time winner of both Wimbledon and the Australian Open. He also boasts Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles, and has led Spain to victory in four Davis Cup finals, most recently in 2019.
Nadal, alongside Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, formed the iconic 'Big Three,' a trio that has dominated men’s tennis since the early 2000s and captivated fans worldwide.
Federer, who retired in 2022 after an emotional farewell shared with Nadal, paid tribute to his long time rival, saying: "What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your remarkable achievements. It's been an absolute honor."
