The Force is strong in Wales, as the latest Star Wars TV series, The Acolyte, features pivotal scenes shot across Bannau Brycheiniog, also known as the Brecon Beacons, and the south Wales valleys. Starring Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung jae, the series captures the essence of sci fi action against the backdrop of Wales' stunning landscapes.
"We shot a lot in Wales," said showrunner Leslye Headland. "What was incredible about Wales was that you could shoot in a beautiful wooded area, but then if you moved up further, you’d be in snow." The diverse Welsh terrain allowed the production to create the illusion of different planets, enhancing the immersive experience for the cast and viewers alike.
Key Filming Locations in Wales
Trago Mills, Merthyr Tydfil: A small, empty lot west of Trago Mills in Merthyr Tydfil served as a filming location. Several fields opposite the Welsh branch of the UK department store were utilized, with production trailers set up in a nearby vacant lot.
Taf Fechan Forest, Bannau Brycheiniog: This forest was prominently featured as the planet Brendok, the mysterious home of the Force sensitive twins, Osha and Mae, played by Lauren and Leah Brady. A significant flashback scene in episode three showcases the young twins playing under a Bunta Tree in Taf Fechan, representing Brendok's lush forests.
Upper Neuadd Reservoir, Bannau Brycheiniog: The drained Upper Neuadd Reservoir provided the setting for a Jedi ship landing site in episode three. Known for once supplying potable water to the Merthyr Tydfil area, the reservoir's distinctive treeline and clearing were ideal for scenes featuring the Wookiee Jedi master, Kelnacca.
Upper Neuadd Dam, Bannau Brycheiniog: Situated adjacent to the reservoir, the Upper Neuadd Dam, built between 1896 and 1902, was another key location. The dam appears in episode seven, where Sol, played by Lee Jung jae, scales its ancient looking walls. Production designer Kevin Jenkins emphasized the intention to depict an older, more peaceful version of the galaxy, drawing parallels to historical periods of the Roman Empire.
The Acolyte is available now on Disney+, with the series finale set to air on July 16, 2024. The integration of Wales' natural beauty into the Star Wars universe marks a significant milestone, transporting both cast and viewers to a galaxy far, far away.
